Curated by Marc Ribak and David Fox, "Art of the Total Trash Underground" features visual works of the Bay Area Trash Rock musician community. One artist, while not of this group, epitomizes the spirit of Trash: John Waters, from beautiful Charm City Baltimore, submitted a piece featuring local bay area celebrity, Scott Peterson. Shannon Shaw from breathtaking Oakland CA, co- headlines the show with over 10 watercolor works, 5 of which depict another celebrity serving time, legendary producer, Phil Spector.
Some of this art has been used for album covers, such as William Keihn's work for "Thee Oh Sees", as well as Shaw's painting of up and coming bay area trash icon "Nobunny". The Godfather of Underground Music, John Dwyer, from "Thee Oh Sees", has an entry inspired by getting evicted from his longtime apartment in the lower Haight. Paul Sharky, from the Excelsior, has done an entire line of black velvet paintings for the show, Seth Bogart, submitted large painted props from his music videos, David Fox submitted his bedroom, Charlie Moonheart lent a work that hung above his bed, and Nobunny himself even sliced off his face and adorned it to a jackelope skull.
Call it art, or call it arse, this is one show that should go unmissed. Special thanks to Amy Carver and Jenny Baie, and the Rena Bransten Gallery.
