The reception for reclusive Bay Area Abstract Expressionist painter Peter Onstad was well attended and received. Standing next to Onstad is good friend and painter Bruce McGaw (towering left).
While we all enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, a few Onstad fans were left in the lurch. Artist Mary Siedman, of Bolinas, writes:
"Hi William, I was so disappointed on Thursday when I arrived at 49 Geary with my friend (over an hour drive from West Marin) @ 7:15 and the guards (3) in the lobby wouldn't let us come in. Even if we had only 10 minutes to see Onstad's show it would have been worth the drive, bridge toll, parking.... Oh well."
The show was indeed powerful and worth the effort. Onstad's strong Bay Area abstractions are complex and intriguing.
Over that weekend at 49 Geary several doors were damaged during a lobby break-in as the culprit attempted to penetrate the inner sanctum. Alarms went off, and the intruder fled.
To those who must see this exhibit, but can't attend during regular hours, I recommend requesting a private showing, as I have a key.
